Minecraft OGG Files

During the 2010 Halloween update, Notch momentarily had an alternate download link available from the development blog. I decided to update from the blog, rather than let Minecraft update on its own. I simply extracted all of the files from the Winzip file to the game. I was about to leave for an out-of-country trip, so I (unwillingly) had to extract the files, shut down, and leave for Europe without trying the new features.

I returned two weeks later and forgot about Minecraft for a while. I needed to do a project for my Mass Communications class, though, so I wanted some somber melodies to accompany it. Instantly, I thought of Minecraft's bleak tunes and went digging into the Minecraft .ogg files. I chose calm2.ogg for the presentation, but I stuck around to listen to the other songs. In the 'resources' file, there was a folder, all on its own, entitled simply, "New Folder."

I opened the folder to find "ashes1ashes.ogg" and played it in Audacity. There was nothing really heard, just silence and faint clicking noises. I sent the song to a fellow Minecrafter who works professionally with sound editing, but they didn't find anything. I eventually started to play Minecraft again, for the first time in a month. The game updated and I played all night, making portals to the Nether and messing around.

I wanted to listen to 'ashes1ashes.ogg' again, but the folder had been removed upon Minecraft updating. I found the file in my e-mails and downloaded the attachment back onto my computer, this time throwing the song with the other music files. That's when everything went downhill.

I opened up my world to find everything on fire, including myself. My hearts would run out, refill, then run out again. Everything was on fire: the grass, the water, even the pigs and chickens. I tried reloading the world several times, but everything still burned. I deleted the world and created a new one, but that world was on fire as well. I decided to explore a bit and tried playing through a day. It was upon sunrise, the time music generally starts to play, that I heard it.

It was a man, humming a melody, clear as day. I listened to it, through the cracks and pops of the fire. It wasn't any recognizable tune, just something a father would hum to a sleepy child. Halfway through the song, the humming started to break up into a bit of a sob. Finally, the song cut off abruptly and the game shut down. There were no pop-up warnings or title screens. The world was deleted, too.

I searched for 'ashes1ashes.ogg' on the forums, to no avail. I checked the blog and noticed that the alternate download link I used on Halloween had been removed. Then I googled it, producing an angelfire page with two links: 'ashes1ashes.ogg' and 'ashes2ashes.ogg.' The first song produced the same sounds as the ones I had - silence and clicks. Hesitantly, I listened to ashes2ashes.ogg. It seemed to pick up where 'ashes1ashes' had left off. The humming turned almost directly to complete sobbing. The sobbing turned to silence, and and at the end the man spoke something in what seemed to be another language.

I transferred 'ashes2ashes.ogg' to the music folder in Minecraft, and all hell broke loose. Never again.

    No, you don't understand.

There is ashes1ashes (with a number one)

    and ashes2ashes (with a number 2)

They both seem to be different parts of the same song.

  7. i ran it in audacity and tripled the volume before i heard the sobbing, and there is a robot spectrogram implemented into the ogg amazingly

  8. I'm guessing you run ashes2ashes through some spectrogram analyzer, but I don't have one, and the one on my Winamp somehow disappeared. Anybody know if there's a message hidden in there (which there most likely is)?

  12. Confirmed: when this song is run through a spectrogram it shows a human shape. The man is talking in Swedish, saying: I miss you brother. Notch is rumored to have or have had a brother. Could it be Herobrine? There's got to be more to this.

  13. Hello everyone,

So just right now something somewhat similar to this happened to me twice.

Except while I was playing, I heard a girl crying.
I'm not too sure what to think about this, I googled it and found nothing, anyone hear of this?

Some time ago i guess somewhere before the halloween update notch implemented that some sounds play if their are caves in close proxmimity to the player (3x3 at least)

  17. hmmm..... this lightly scares me yet i need these files so i can run them through some other things like a clearer spectrogram the default player skin looking picture in the music or should i say freaking scare the crap out of me tale i need these and i need a spectrogram run the specrtron gram on some portal radio chatter take it with you through the entire levels and that proves my theory and that theory is that every one should look apart the noises and music and listen then put it through the spectrogram.:|

  18. Use winamp to play the files

  19. Where can I get a spectrogram program?

  20. I started analyzing ashes1ashes.ogg in Audacity by doing numerous adjustments to the sound in search of a hidden message of some sort.

What I did find peculiar was that when the speed is dramatically reduced, it definitely begins to sound like it was a recording made in some sort of room.

That's not all, there is also a constant beep that comes in a very fine pattern. Not just any beep, the kind of beep you hear from heart rate monitors used in hospitals, which makes sense if it is related to the death of his brother.

What you hear as clicks throughout the sound clip are heard very distinctly as something being placed on a table occasionally that sounds hollow inside like a cup.

I'll take a look at ashes2ashes.ogg and if I find anything worth noting I'll leave another post.

  24. It's notch's brother telling him he misses him

  25. I Guess it's Notch missing his brother, Which could have been died.

Think the Name of the files is related to how he ended. Maybe he was cremated.

  26. Who wrote the sonnet of seaside romance? Guess Shakespeare would feel wordless at the sight of marine motif lace wedding dress. Amber’s beach simple wedding dresses unfold pictures of sea-inspired details like pearl beading, shelly appliqué and metallic embroidery. A profusion of drapes, bubbles, pleating and ruffling echoes to the very physique of the beach and the sea.

  27. Who ever made the files is great at what they did. I know he made them 'cause I've never missed an update and what ever I missed I'd have a friend send to me (If they got the update if not from a different friend) and maybe Notch doesn't have a dead brother and if he did why would he program herobrine into the game and also though on some updates on the blog it says Herobrine removed on 3 updates the herobrine part is reffering to new audio, items, or blocks and on one it has a star meaning it's just a joke. I know my MC

  28. FAIL Herobrine was never in it notch gave up on puting him in and put endermen in instead.

  31. omg so the clicks that we hear are bips from hospital machines and notch says i miss you brother so this file is made when herobrine was in the hospital so herobrine is really notchs brother

  32. no herobrines just something this is the story: when mojang was creating a assistant for steve but they messed up thats herobrine
but really i dint know this creep:onedaviduok

  33. creative story. But not scary. What scares people is not Herobrine or the Hidden files on the game, its the smaller things that no one ever thinks about, like who built the generated structures, or the players recurring lonliness. I am not very great at writing scary stories so if someone else could that would be great. Thanks a lot!
